Dr George Balalis
MBBS, MPhil (Surgery), FRACS

Dr Balalis grew up in Adelaide and is an Australian trained General Surgeon. He specialises in Bariatrics (Obesity), Upper GI and Laparoscopic surgery. He has a particular passion for ‘keyhole’ techniques, and is trained in complex laparoscopic surgery. Dr Balalis also regularly performs endoscopic procedures, and is accredited for gastroscopy and colonoscopy with the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA).

Dr Balalis was selected for a post fellowship position in Upper GI  and Bariatric surgery with the Australia and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA) in 2018. Dr Balalis worked at The Alfred Hospital in Victoria, as the Upper GI and Bariatric Fellow. He then worked in the United Kingdom (UK) at Nottingham University Hospital (NUH) NHS Trust, as the post-CCT Senior Clinical Upper GI Fellow. This is one of the largest Upper GI surgery units in all of Europe and the UK, and has an outstanding record for excellence in Upper GI surgery, particularly in cancer and complex benign operations. Dr Balalis was the recipient of a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Travelling Scholarship for this role.

Dr Balalis then undertook further training in obesity surgery at The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland, including performing complex revisional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This training has provided Dr Balalis with the necessary skills and know-how to provide you with the best care.

He is active with professional societies and audit including ANZMOSS (Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgical Society), IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders), ANZGOSA (Australian and New Zealand Gastro-oesophageal Surgical Association) and RACS (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons).

He regularly attends national and international meetings, as he believes it is important to stay up to date. He has completed a Master of Philosophy (Surgery) in oesophageal cancer at The University of Adelaide, and continues to publish in peer-review journals.  He is also a keen teacher with a position as a Clinical Lecturer at The University of Adelaide.

Dr Balalis has recently received a further RACS Scholarship, the Margorie Hooper Travel Scholarship, which will enable him to travel to the Netherlands to continue training in robotic surgery.

Dr Balalis is a very proud husband and father of two boys. If he is not seeing patients or operating, he is playing tennis or enjoying some down time with family and friends.
