Dr Justin Bessell is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Australian Metabolic and Obesity Surgery. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Flinders University and the University of Adelaide, and formerly a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre.
Dr Bessell also provides visiting surgical services to the Darwin Private Hospital and the Australian Defence Force. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel for the Army Reserve, and has deployed to war zones in East Timor (twice) and Solomon Islands, and to Banda Aceh in support of ADF military operations. He is the former Chairman of both the Military Section of the College of Surgeons and the SA Regional Board in General Surgery.
As well as his specialty of bariatric, metabolic and weight loss surgery, he continues to perform a wide variety of general, upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery, interventional endoscopy procedures, and colonoscopy bowel cancer screening.
In 2003 Dr Bessell founded Australian Obesity Surgery (now Australian Metabolic and Obesity Surgery), which enshrined the concept of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to medical weight loss. The collaboration embeds allied healthcare professionals within the matrix of obesity management using scientifically-proven, evidence-based therapies. While novel at the time, this approach has since developed into the standard of care for bariatric practices.
Dr Bessell trained in Adelaide, during which he completed a Doctorate in minimally-invasive surgery, culminating in a six-month period of research into robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery in Germany. Prior to returning home, he spent a further two years in Brisbane and Leicester.
He is married with 3 children and enjoys racing bicycles and cars.
Dr Bessell has published over 50 medical articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed international surgical journals, and has presented innumerable papers and research topics at national and international surgical meetings and conferences.
