Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the speciality that looks after the medical conditions that relate to the gastrointestinal tract – including the oesophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon. It also involves related digestive organs such as the pancreas and liver. All gastroenterologists are trained to look after patients with conditions affecting these organs, some also have a particular interest in diseases of the liver (hepatology – link)

Common conditions that gastroenterologists would manage include gastro-oesophageal reflux, stomach ulcers, gastro-intestinal bleeding, functional gastro-intestinal disorders (irritable bowel syndrome) and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). Gastroenterologists investigate symptoms by performing endoscopy and colonoscopy. Some have had further training in endoscopic ultrasound and video capsule endoscopy. Early stages of oesophageal and colorectal cancer can be treated through these procedures. SA Group of Specialists have gastroenterologists providing services at all 4 locations as well as a number of country areas.
